Gene Wilder was an American actor, comedian, film director and author. He was best known for films like Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Young Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles. Wilder was born Jerome Silberman to Jewish parents on June 11, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His father was William and his mother was Jeanne. He had a sister named Corinne who passed away at age 86. Wilder attended Washington High School followed by the University of Iowa. He graduated in 1955 with a degree in communication and theater arts. Wilder also studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England. He was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army as a paramedic.

Wilder drew inspiration from his sister to become an actor. He was also tasked with keeping his mother entertained and laughing after she was diagnosed with rheumatic fever. Wilder made his stage debut as “Balthasar” in a production of Romeo and Juliet while still in high school. He studied three years at the HB Studio in New York City and was later accepted into the Actors Studio. Wilder appeared in a number of Broadway plays including Mother Courage and Her Children, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. He became acquainted with actor and director Mel Brooks in 1963.

Wilder made his feature film debut in the 1967 flick, Bonnie and Clyde. He followed up with a supporting role as “Leo Bloom” in The Producers (1968). Wilder landed his breakthrough role as “Willy Wonka” in the 1971 musical fantasy film, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actor. Wilder starred as Jim, the “Waco Kid” in Blazing Saddles, and as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein in Young Frankenstein. Both films were directed by Mel Brooks and were released in 1974. Other films by wilder include The Frisco Kid (1979) with Harrison Ford, Stir Crazy (1980) with Richard Pryor, and The Woman in Red (1984) with Charles Grodin.

Gene Wilder died on August 28, 2016 at the age of 83. His reported cause of death was complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was staying at his home in Stamford, Connecticut at the time of his death. Wilder was 5ft 10in tall and had a net worth of $20 million. He was married four times. His first wife was Mary Mercier (1960-65), followed by Mary Joan Schutz (1967-74), then Gilda Radner (1984-89), and finally Karen Boyer (1991-2016). Radner was an actress, comedian and an original cast member on Saturday Night Live. She died in 1989 from ovarian cancer. Wilder is survived by his fourth wife. He also had an adopted daughter from his second marriage named Katharine.
