He was born Erik Weisz in Budapest, subsequently Ehrich Weiss or Harry Weiss, on March 24, 1874, and died on October 31, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, USA. He was a Hungarian-American illusionist and stunt performer who was best known for his spectacular escape performances. As “Harry Handcuff Houdini,” he initially gained public attention on a tour of Europe, when he challenged police forces to keep him imprisoned.
As time went on, he added new challenges to his repertory, such as being dangled from buildings by ropes, wearing straitjackets underwater, and having to hold his breath inside a sealed milk can. In 1904, hundreds of people stood by and watched as he attempted to break free from special handcuffs commissioned by London’s Daily Mirror, which kept them waiting for an hour. Another stunt saw him buried alive and just barely manage to claw his way to the surface, resulting in his emerging in a condition of near-disintegration after being rescued.
While many people believed that Houdini’s escapes were staged, he portrayed himself as the scourge of forgers and impersonators of magicians and spiritualists. As President of the Society of American Magicians, he was committed to upholding professional standards and exposing the activities of fraudulent magicians. He was also eager to file a lawsuit against anybody who attempted to copy his escape antics. Houdini appeared in a number of films, but he eventually retired from acting because the industry refused to pay him enough money. Additionally, he was an avid pilot who had aspirations of being the first guy to fly an aircraft in Australia.
