The McCaffery accident has sent shockwaves through the Iowa City community.

The Iowa City Police Department has issued a citation to Jack McCaffery, the youngest son of Iowa Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery, for a simple misdemeanor due to failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The incident took place on May 22nd when Jack, then 16 years old and a sophomore at Iowa City West High, was involved in the accident.

The investigation revealed that Iowa National Guard soldier, Corey Hite, died due to injuries he had sustained from being hit by a car.

Hite was crossing the road at a crosswalk when the accident took place.

Reports suggest that Jack’s car hit Hite, and he sustained severe injuries, eventually leading to his death on June 5th.

McCaffery Accident- No Evidence of Distracted Driving

The McCafferys authorized a press release via their attorney, stating that investigators had concluded that the accident was unavoidable with no evidence to suggest distracted driving.

As the jogger proceeded with a wave from the driver of another vehicle, a sudden and unforeseen movement caused them to dart in front of Jack’s car, leaving him unable to stop in time and resulting in an accident.

In a display of immense understanding and respect, the McCaffery family chose to withhold their statement until now, recognizing the gravity of the tragedy that befell the Hite family.

Their decision was guided by a deep sense of privacy and the necessity to allow the completion of the investigation by the ICPD.
